The Use of Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) in Pharmacy

Radio Frequency Identification ( RFID ) continues to gain rapid popularity in Healthcare, and rightfully so. RFID technology enables real time scanning that optimizes inventory management, efficiency, and medication safety while creating quantifiable pharmaceutical supply chain benefits by providing item level inventory visibility down to NDC and lot. Recognizing the advantages that RFID technology presents IMI joined industry consortium DoseID to help increase interoperability, quality and performance of RFID tagged Products. Tamper Evident Caps with RFID provide a labor-reducing solution to incorporating RFID into your drug doses. With a simple twist of a syringe, your CSPs are equipped with renowned tamper evident protection and powerful analytic automation capabilities. These two powerful technologies in combination enhance workflow efficiencies, eliminate time-consuming manual inventory control processes, provide assistance with growing regulatory demand, and supply a comprehensive strategy to prevent, detect, and resolve drug diversion events. In addition, by incorporating RFID technology into IMI’s Industry-leading Tamper Evident Caps, facilities can reduce their cost of RFID implementation by up to 55% with little time-to-live and minimal staff investment, procedural changes, or capital investment.

Powerful RFID Capabilities and Essential Drug Security, with A Simple Twist of A Syringe.

Reduce Cost of Implementation

By incorporating RFID technology into IMI's Industry-leading Prep-Lock Tamper Evident Caps, facilities can reduce their cost of RFID implementation with little time-to-live, minimal staff investment, procedural changes, or capital investment.

Simplify Labor Intensive Processes

Reduce medication restocking by 72 - 96% and support multiple pharmacy workflows.

Reduce Drug Shortages

Incorporated RFID technology improves restocking efficiencies with automation, allows for on-demand reporting for identification of upcoming expirations, and reduces inventory visibility gaps.

Traceability & Visibility

DoseID takes serialization from the unit of sale to the unit of use. It uniquely serializes every dose to track each action taken upon it during its life cycle and ensure RFID Tagged drugs work in all downstream IT systems in hospitals and health systems.

Prevent Diversion Events

Tamper Evident Caps equipped with RFID Technology actively deter diversion by providing a physical barrier and powerful analytic capabilities to your drugs at product level.

RFID Technology in Drug Security

The FDA has recommended tamper-evident packaging as part of a multilayered system for preventing diversion and introduction of counterfeit drugs into the drug supply chain. In addition, the FDA indicated that radiofrequency identification (RFID) technology may be a reliable method for reducing diversion and counterfeit products in the drug supply chain.

Successful use of RFID for medication tracking has been reported in high-risk settings, such as intensive care units, and for IV medications. “We’re using RFID tags to automate some of our inventory management and get better insight into inventory movement,” Dr Stranges said. “It really helps our efficiency.”

About DoseID

IMI is a proud member of DoseID, the DoseID Consortium is a self-governing consortium established to unify the industry around an approach to serialized, RFID-tagged pharmaceutical products. The industry innovators of DoseID are joined by the mission to develop and administer comprehensive RFID standards for the pharmaceutical Healthcare industry. IMI’s alliance with DoseID perfectly supports our core mission of providing drug security solutions to healthcare institutions worldwide. The incorporation of DoseID's RFID tags on IMI's Tamper Evident Caps delivers a big advantage in supply chain management. They offer both hospitals and outsource compounding operations an efficient and cost-saving method for applying RFID benefits to their compounded sterile preparations.

DoseID

Products carrying DoseID Certification ensure the quality, performance, and interoperability of RFID-tagged drug products with DoseID Certified systems.

Interoperability

DoseID Certified RFID Tags are interoperable with GTIN, SGTIN, DSCSA, Blockchain, and other Standards. Systems utilizing these standards may work with DoseID Certified RFID Tags, however, DoseID can only ensure the quality, performance, and interoperability of RFID Tagged drug products using DoseID Certified hardware systems.

Drugs and hardware devices with DoseID Certified tags are compliant with the existing RAIN and GSI standards.

“We’re using RFID tags to automate some of our inventory management and get better insight into inventory movement, it really helps our efficiency.”
